    ISM Certification implementation (04-11-2009)

A2SEA has completed implementation of optional ISM Certification of the Fleet.

New Safety certification aims to minimise accidents.

A2SEA has completed implementation of an optional International Safety Management (ISM) certification for our two jack-ups to improve safety levels necessary in the demanding installation environment in the North Sea and other European waters.

The ISM certification also helps to meet the expectations of our customers, who requested an increased focus on safety. This focus on safety is fully in line with A2SEA’s management team ambitions, therefore it was decided that A2SEA would go all the way and proceed with certification of the entire fleet to ensure that we are fully compliant with and indeed exceeding safety regulations.

SEA ENERGY, SEA POWER, and SEA JACK were the first vessels to achieve the ISM certificates, and this autumn the process was completed when SEA WORKER also attained this certification. We can proudly say that now all our 4 vessels have a full ISM certificate.

“It is of great importance that we minimise the number of accidents, and preferably we do not want any accidents at all. We are working hard to develop a safety system that meets the present requirements of HSE, and we have therefore decided to certify our entire fleet, including both our special designed vessels and our jack-ups. With the ISM certification we will achieve a safety system that provides us with the highest degree of safety and ensures regular auditing of our systems”, Thomas Broe, HSEQ Manager in A2SEA, explained.

ISM – a part of the basic law of the shipping business

ISM stands for International Safety Management and is a part of the SOLAS convention, which is looked upon as the most important of all international treaties concerning the safety of ships. The first version was adopted in 1914, in response to the Titanic disaster.

As jack-ups are not permanent facilities, they are not covered by the newly upgraded offshore law or regulated by the same maritime legislation applying to our existing special purpose vessels.  However, A2SEA did not want our jack up barges to slip through the net, so we made the decision to get the jack up barges certified in order to achieve common standards across the fleet. The standards cover division of responsibilities on board, detailed performance specifications and detailed definitions, and specifications of all critical operations onboard.

    Safety code at sea

The ISM (International Safety Management) Code is the International Management Code for the Safe operation of ships and for Pollution Prevention. The ISM Code aims at ensuring safety at sea, prevention of human injury or loss of life, and avoidance of damage to the environment, particularly the marine environment, and to property. The ISM forms an essential part of Shipping Management and as part of the ISM every company should develop, implement and maintain a Safety Management System (SMS) in compliance with the Code. It is up to the individual company how to implement the codes.
